How I Became the Scottsdale DJ: The Story Behind DJ Drewstyle
Some people find their thing early. For me, it was playing around the in the basement with a Numark DJ controller.
I was 14 the first time I got my hands on one. No lessons, no YouTube tutorials — just instinct and a basement loud enough to make my mom regret ever letting me near a speaker. She'd knock on the door, I'd turn it down just enough to hear her, then crank it right back up. That basement was my first venue. And honestly? The crowd was tough. She had zero tolerance for a bad set.
That obsession never went away. It just grew quieter for a while — until grad school turned the volume back up.
Where the Real Education Happened
I'm one month away from completing my master's at the Walter Cronkite School of Journalism and Mass Communication. The program sharpened everything — storytelling, leadership, social media, networking, and MC skills that now show up in every event I run. But if I'm being honest, going to the clubs during grad school is what saved me. That's where the academic side of communication met the real-world side of reading a room. Two different classrooms. Both essential.
Scottsdale Changed the Game
In 2024, I relocated to Scottsdale full-time. New city, new energy, and a scene that takes events seriously. I picked up a job at Life Time — and it turned out to be more than just a paycheck. A coworker connected me to someone who would end up being a mentor, a guy who showed me what open-format DJing actually looks like at a high level. Reading a crowd, blending genres without losing momentum, keeping the energy exactly where it needs to be. Top 40 into house into hip hop into country, all in one set, all feeling intentional.
That's when things clicked.
The First Paid Gig
Last summer, I played my first paid gig — a poolside set at Life Time North Scottsdale. Sun out, crowd moving, music doing exactly what it's supposed to do: making the moment feel right. It wasn't just a gig. It was confirmation.
Everything I'd been building since that basement — the ear, the instinct, the obsession with getting the energy right — it all showed up that afternoon. And I knew this was it.
Why DJ Drewstyle Exists
I didn't build this to be a DJ company. I built it because I genuinely love what happens when music lands right in a room. When the transition hits and people feel it without knowing why. When a corporate event that could've been forgettable becomes something people actually talk about.
Every event I take on, you work directly with me — from the first conversation to the last song. No middlemen, no surprises, no "we'll send whoever's available." Just Drew, the same guy who was spinning too loud in his mom's basement, now doing it for a living in Scottsdale.
